SEAM is ANZMAC’s very own Society for Emerging Academics in Marketing, a member-led network established and funded in 2026 supporting the development and success of emerging marketing academics through structured activities that foster mentorship, collaboration and professional development during the transition from doctoral study to independent academic careers. Since its establishment, SEAM has also received support from Adelaide University and the University of Canterbury.
The key beneficiaries of this initiative are therefore Early Career Academics, Early Career Researchers, or Early Career Educators across institutions, defined as academics within five years of PhD conferral or longer if combined with an allowable period of career interruption (e.g., due to international relocation; caring responsibilities, disability, disaster management and recovery, limited or no access to facilities and resources, medical conditions, non-research positions; parental leave; unemployment and being the primary carer of a dependent child). The benefits also extend to the wider ANZMAC community.
In principle, SEAM will therefore provide a dedicated platform where marketing scholars can share experiences, develop collaborations, and strengthen career trajectories by giving and receiving mentorship.
Examples of the plan for activities in addition to the dedicated session at the annual conference include:
- Developing competitive research pipelines;
- Navigating research funding opportunities;
- Managing teaching responsibilities;
- Supervising postgraduate students;
- Building collaborative research networks;
- Understanding academic careers’ pathways and progression;
- Managing the balance between research, teaching, service, and personal lives;
- Navigating different definitions (and expectations) of excellence, impact criteria, and performance benchmarks.
